What Is Kitty Yoga? Everything You Need to Know
If you’ve been seeing adorable videos of people doing yoga surrounded by playful kittens, you’re not alone. Kitty yoga (also called cat yoga) has become one of the most joyful wellness trends around the world, and it’s now here in Sydney too.
But what actually is kitty yoga? Is it real yoga? Is it safe for the cats? And why is everyone so obsessed?
Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is Kitty Yoga?
Kitty yoga is a gentle yoga class where participants practice yoga while rescue kittens roam freely around the room. During the class, the kittens play, nap, explore, and if you're lucky, sometimes curl up right beside you on your mat or even into your lap!
At Kitty Yoga Club, each session includes:
- 45 minutes of guided, beginner friendly yoga
- 15 minutes of kitten play and cuddles (toys are provided)
- Rescue kittens who are available for adoption
You can learn more about our classes on the Kitty Yoga Club homepage.
How Does a Kitty Yoga Class Work?
A typical kitty yoga class is designed to feel relaxed, welcoming, and low-pressure. Here’s what to expect:
1. Arrival and Meet the Kittens
You’ll arrive, settle in, and meet the kittens in your session. They are free to explore the room at their own pace.
2. 45 Minutes of Gentle Yoga
A qualified instructor guides you through a slow, accessible flow. It’s suitable for beginners and all fitness levels.
3. Kittens Roam Freely
The kittens wander, play, climb, and nap while building confidence as they socialise with humans. Participants can choose to focus on their yoga practice or join in the kitten cuddles and play – whatever feels right in the moment.
4. 15 Minutes of Play and Cuddles
After yoga, you’ll have dedicated time to cuddle, play, and take photos with the kittens. Toys are provided, so you can join in the fun and interact with them however you like.
You can see upcoming sessions on our bookings page.
Is Kitty Yoga Safe for the Kittens?
Yes! When run responsibly, kitty yoga is safe and enriching for the kittens.
At Kitty Yoga Club:
- All kittens come from approved rescue partners
- Sessions are short and closely supervised, with breaks in between to let the cats rest in a quiet, calm space without music
- Kittens always have access to food, water, and cozy rest areas
- Kittens choose how they interact, and if any kitten isn’t enjoying the class, we gently remove them to ensure their wellbeing
These sessions help kittens:
- Build confidence around people
- Socialise in a calm environment
- Feel comfortable in new spaces
- Increase their chances of being adopted
You can learn more about our rescue approach on our About Us page.
What Are the Benefits of Kitty Yoga?
While it’s undeniably cute, kitty yoga offers real mental, physical, and emotional benefits.
From a mental health perspective, spending time with playful kittens can help lower stress and anxiety, improve mood and emotional wellbeing, and encourage mindfulness and presence in the moment.
Physically, the gentle yoga flow improves flexibility and mobility, builds light strength and balance, and is low-impact and accessible for beginners.
Emotionally, interacting with the kittens provides comfort and connection, sparks laughter and joy through play, and creates a calming, feel-good experience that many participants describe as restorative.
Overall, most people leave a kitty yoga session feeling lighter, calmer, and happier – and often with a big smile from spending time with their furry companions.
